Authentic Student Research
The later curriculum activities moved beyond demonstrations and content review. Students collected, transformed, compared, and interpreted real scientific data.
Historical Sunspot Data
Students analyzed monthly sunspot records extending back to 1750, graphed assigned 12-year periods, looked for cyclical patterns, and calculated statistical variation.
SID + External Data
Students graphed a day of SID observations, compared them with NOAA/online solar information, converted Universal Time, and considered why the receiver detected events only during certain hours.
Independent Investigation
The culminating study asked students to make a prediction about an effect associated with sunspot activity, compare periods of high and low activity, and communicate results in a poster and paper.
Why this matters for learning design
Students were not given a pre-determined “correct” graph to reproduce. The sequence required them to reconcile multiple data sources, account for time and observational constraints, and build an evidence-based explanation.

That mixture is one reason the curriculum translates well into a modern UDL framing: the original design already used multiple forms of representation, engagement, investigation, and expression.
